How To Define Your Personal Style: 12 Ways

What does “personal style” mean? It shows the world who you are and what you want them to see about you. You can make a name for yourself just by dress because your style says something about you well before you say a word. But this is simpler to state than to do.

It’s hard to explain something so natural, and even harder when it’s about you. The best thing about knowing your style is that you can push yourself to go outside your comfort bubble every so often. It’s not set in stone, and it’s likely to change as you get older and as you change as a person.

Step 1: Sort your clothes.

People are always changing, which means your taste is also always changing. What you liked in college or school might not mean much to you now that you’re an adult. Always clean your closet and eliminate things that are taking up space so you can make room for more. Not because you need more clothes, but because you want to get more out of the ones you have.

Keep track of the clothes you haven’t worn in the last year. You should get rid of that item if it’s less than three times. Cleaning your closet will also help you figure out what styles and aspects you no longer like. This will assist you in figuring out a little bit about your style. If not more, maybe even just one.

Step 2: Find your style.

After you’ve cleaned out your closet, start telling people about who you are or what you’re like. This is the hardest step because you have to know something about yourself. Look for words that describe your style and that make you feel something. This will be a good start if you want to find your style.

Step 3: Actively look for inspiration.

Do research if you think you’ve found a new word to describe your style. Look into the word and the style that goes with it. Get ideas for what to wear by keeping magazine cutouts, taking screenshots on your phone, or making a Pinterest board as I did.

When scrolling through Instagram, I sometimes see outfits I like and might want to try out in the future. I keep those posts to look back on. I suggest you get a visual starting point to help you along the way. The more effort you put into it, your style will likely change.

Step 4: Consider your body type.

Learn your body type to figure out what might look best on you. Even though you will be beautiful no matter your size or shape, find clothing that makes you feel good. Nothing is more appealing than a woman who is sure of herself.

Step 5: Check to see if your current closet fits who you will become.

After you’ve answered all the questions above, try to figure out what the remainder of your closet says about you. It would help if you tracked how often you wear an item and whether there are distinct ways to wear it in the future. Would you still feel more comfortable if you changed your style and left your comfort zone? You want to construct a closet that fits who you are now and who you require to become in the future.

Step 6: Ask yourself if your way of life could be a hindrance.

It would help if you thought about how you live and what activities you want to do. Look at your job, your hobbies, and how you spend your time daily. Do you try to move around more? Do you have to wear office clothes when you go to work? This will help you sort your needs into groups.

Try to make a list of everything you want to put money into. Set a date for when you’d like to have a mostly full closet. My timeline, to be honest, never ends, but I expanded out my needs. I don’t think about shopping too much after I’ve bought what I need.

The next step is to describe it: Use a few words to describe your style. Think about mood, themes, trends, and silhouettes. What is one trend you’ve seen lately that you love and would like to try? or what styles don’t make you feel comfortable and sure of yourself? This will help you figure out where to put your money in the future.

Step 8: Make it visible.

The greatest part to do is to put together a mood board. Put it all on the wall after you print it out. Make sure you can see it every day. If you maintain looking at these pictures, you’ll get used to how they look, and at some point, you won’t need to look at them.

Step 9: Experimenting is the key to finding your style.

You don’t have to do it all at once when you want to change your style. Take small steps in this direction, so you don’t overwhelm yourself. You can do everything on this list at your own pace over a year. Try different things with your style. Try out a new hairstyle as well as a new makeup trend. Both of these can have a big effect on your style. When you feel ready, try everything and anything. This is the only method to find out more about yourself.

Step 10: Pick your essentials.

I could give a list of wardrobe essentials, but you might not like them. Go with your man and spend money on things that you and he both think are important. When you go shopping, do you incline to gravitate toward a certain section or a certain piece? Remember that and build from there.

Step 11: Choose a color palette that suits your style.

This is hard for me because I’ve always worn bright colors that make me feel happy. Then, I started to like a more muted color palette with dark colors and tones at some point. That’s fine, wear what you want. There are no rules or right or wrong in this place.

Step 12: Maintenance

We often neglect that every year, we have to go back to point 1 and start over. It’s important to take care of what you’ve worked to construct. Don’t fill your space with too much stuff because it’s hard to sort through. This is why women always feel like they have too many clothes and nothing to wear. We commit an error when we don’t clean out and organize our closets to show how we’re feeling and how things are changing.
